UN partners with UNE-TL to promote youth engagement for SDGs in Timor-Leste

UN Resident Coordinator Mr Roy Trivedy and UNE-TL President Sra. Idelta Maria Rodrigues signing the MoU

It’s clear that young people have a vital role to play for the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in young countries like Timor-Leste where the youth represents a majority of the population. As reflected in the 2019 National Voluntary Review of SDGs presented by the Government of Timor-Leste, young people are major drivers of change now, and a powerful resource for the country’s development in the future. Therefore, the implementation of SDGs in Timor-Leste demands active engagement of young people.

This week, the UN in Timor-Leste and the União Nacional dos Escuteiros de Timor-Leste (UNE-TL) formed a partnership through the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which enables all UN agencies to collaborate with this educational organization open to all youth regardless of gender, race or religion to promote and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.

This partnership is of great relevance to the development context of Timor-Leste and promises to help in accelerating progress on the SDGs. It will help to raise the awareness of young generation on some of the most pressing issues faced by Timor-Leste and world today, like food security, gender equality and climate changes. Furthermore, by actively involving the Scouts in the development of this country it will enable them to become advocates for SDGs to other youth groups.

Under this agreement, all UN agencies will work closely with Scouts on a range of topics and carry out activities on their areas of expertise, including SDG3 – Health, SDG4 – Education, SDG5 – Gender Equality and SDG13,14 and 15. This is an inclusive approach as we try to include all youth - girls, those living in rural and urban areas, and those living with disabilities. The cooperation between the UN and youth organizations like UNE-TL will help empower young people and promote youth-focused development in Timor-Leste. The role of young people as agents of change and their potential of contributions to sustainable development needs to continue to be enhanced.
